Laneast Working Weekend
5th - 7th May 2007

Saturday dawned bright and sunny, the camping field was nearly full and already the eager drivers were up in the field preparing their ploughs and opening up their individual plots ready for the off.

The turnout for this years event was excellent with 52 Vintage and Classic tractors entering for the ploughing matches and a brilliant display of 30 Stationary Engine as well. There were also 4 teams of horses who staged a horse ploughing demonstration organised by Mr. A. Trethewey. In the vintage tractor working section there were 23 vintage tractors rolling, ploughing and harrowing.

Mr John Clifford from Worcester attended to judge the best vintage tractor, the accolade of which went to Mr Geoff Parrfit with his 1935 McCormick Deering.

Back on the field the ploughmen spent a good part of the day toiling up and down the furrows trying to keep them straight and even. As the judges walked around discussing their views, you could see the men watching from the corner of their eye to see if they could pick up anything that was being said. As each man finished and went back for some well earned refreshment, the judges would complete their score cards ready to be handed back for the final results tally. By the end of a glorious day we were all waiting in anticipation for the results. Everyone had talked through what they had done, what they could have done and what they would do next time !

As the results were announced they were greeted with cheers, congratulations and to others, never mind, better luck next time. Some were nicely surprised, whilst others were the expected results. At the end of the day all the implements were cleaned and put away and everybody retired to their caravans for a much needed rest.

Unfortunately Sunday didn't dawn as bright but the ploughing was completed before the heavens opened, but there were still a few hard and fast troupers who stayed for just a little bit more that could be done.
All the trophies were duly presented but by Sunday evening, sadly a lot of people had given up and gone home due to the weather as no more ploughing could be done under those conditions.

On Friday 11th October the Eastern Area of the CTC held a presentation evening at the Winds of Change, South Petherwin to present a cheque for £1000, raised partially by the Working Weekend  and other fund raising events to the Mid Cornwall Diabetes Group. The cheque was accepted on behalf of the group by Mrs Prosser who expressed her thanks on their behalf for the donation.

About 45 members and friends attended the evening with most enjoying a meal before the presentation. Later in the evening a raffle was held and £87 was raised for the CTC.
Many thanks must go to all those who helped make this event possible at Laneast working weekend.

We will leave you with a few more photographs from Laneast.
